Richard W Matheis' History: 1934 - 2007

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Richard was the son of John and Mary Matheis, whose family farm in Dubois, Indiana is still in operation and owned by the family. Richard's wife was Geraldine Irene Matheis, nee Schiller, also from Dubois County, Indiana, born August 3, 1934. Geraldine was the oldest of four daughters to Martin and Viola Schiller. Her sisters were Ruth Ann, Sharon, and Carla. Richard graduated college with an engineering degree, and lived an honest, loving, hard working life with three major jobs. First, as a worker for Hart Furnace in Louisville, as an air conditioning and heating technician, although he couldn't afford air conditioning in his own home until about 1973. Second, he was a part owner of horse race syndicate Serenity Stable. Third, he was a union pipe fitter for Reynolds Aluminum. He is known mostly for being an avid sportsman, hunter, and lover of life and helper of the weak. They had two sons. Stephen Martin Matheis, born November 15, 1953, in Evansville, Indiana, who was in Who's Who Book of outstanding students who graduated in 1971, attended Purdue University and the University of Louisville with a law degree. Later in business with three friends in running a marketing firm. Then, a leading geographer for the U.S. Census Bureau. Known for his integrity, intelligence, gift of extreme patience and moderation, and well balanced knowledge in all fields, intellectual, sports, even trivia. Never known to commit a single violent act in his life, and known for subduing the tempers of others. The second son, Johnny Richard Matheis, born December 10, 1956, in Louisville Kentucky had a more troubled upbringing, being more of a student just under the genius level of Stephen, and with no marketable skills nor any connections as they were strangers in a strange land that refused to allow Stephen or Johnny any opportunity, even if they earned it. Johnny worked for over one hundred employers, including a stint as a clerk in the U.S. Air Force, majored in Theater at Jefferson Community College, and attempted a Physical Therapy Assistant program before running out of funds and getting serious financial trouble. He did save some money working in a factory before having back problems that kept him from staying on hard surfaces for long times. He used most of his funds to buy into a race horse ownership, being one of four owners of Serenity Stable with his father Richard, Mr. Frank Pezzarossi, and trainer John McCord. The stable did moderately well until it folded. Johnny worked as groom, horse race handicapper, and then finally a mutuels clerk (cashing and selling tickets). He also worked in costume acts for about 15 years, including exotic dancing for bachelorette parties. Richard had strong family values, even after a divorce with Geraldine in 1974. Both parties became sturdy, steady workers with love for their respective families. Richard had many brothers and sisters in Dubois County, Indiana, and many nieces and nephews who adored him. Stephen and Johnny remained bachelors, mostly due to fear for the lives of possible children from a very adamant set of people in the Kentucky area that they couldn't avoid. They knew if they had children or wives, their lives would be in endless peril, and it would not end well. Stephen plans to live far away, and help the family from afar, with visions of tranquil country sides, but Johnny plans to fulfill Richard's dream of family by some day adding onto the Matheis family farm, and making it a natural organic style farm, free from the genetic engineers of the day. Many of the cousins feel the same way. I know, because I'm the second son, Johnny..
