ROBERT HONAN OBITUARY
Robert V. Honan, 95
PORTLAND - Robert V. Honan, 95, formerly of South Portland, died peacefully Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 24, 2016, at Seventy-Five State Street.
He was born in Portland, June 8, 1921, the son of the late Martin and Ellen (Brogan) Honan. He attended St. Dominic's Elementary School and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1937, and Portland Junior College.
During World War II, Mr. Honan honorably served in the United States Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He worked for the United States Treasury Department for 40 years.
He was affectionately known as "Uncle Bobby" to his 21 nieces, nephews, and their families; they were the children he never had. He was interested in their lives and stayed current with their latest endeavors and accomplishments. An avid reader of the Portland Press Herald, he could engage in conversations from local and national sports to local and national politics and current events. He was a loyal and dedicated brother, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed, especially, on holidays and birthdays, where he was either at his brother Jimmy's home in Falmouth or a niece's home in Portland.
A devout Catholic, he volunteer-ed many hours at St. John the Evangelist Church in South Portland. When he moved back to Portland, and the neighborhood of his childhood, he was a regular communicant at Mercy Hospital, walking to daily Mass until his passing.
Over the last five years, Mr. Honan had been a resident of Seventy-Five State Street, where he developed several strong friendships.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Annette Sylvester Honan, in 2011; brothers, Martin Honan, in 1973; and John Honan, in 2003; sisters, Margaret Honan Marshall, in 1995; and Helen Honan Gorham, in 1997.
He is survived by his brother, James E. Honan, and his wife, Mary T., of Falmouth; and 21 nieces, nephews and their families.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland. Private burial with military honors will be held at a later date. To view Robert's memorial page or to share an online condolence, please visit: www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
