He married Maria Albina (Walters) Leversha in 1886, and had children Robert Henry Leversha, Percy Daniel Leversha, Herbert James Leversha, Ethel Beatrice Leversha, and Susan Maria "Susie" Leversha. Robert Leversha died at age 82 years old on August 18, 1942 in Harcourt.

Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.

In 1888, when he was 28 years old, on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
