Robert Cooper Reid was born on August 2, 1942 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts United States to George Cooper Reid, and had a brother Florence Lydia (Reid) Mckinzey. He married Linda May (Sims) in August 1962 in San Diego, San Diego County, California and they later divorced. They had children Robert Cooper Reid Jr, Pamela Lynn Wolfskill, and Richard Brian Reid.
