His mother Inez was born on September 21, 1902 in Montpelier, Blackford Co., Indiana and lived in Chester, Wells, Indiana, USA. She married Leonard on June 6, 1922 in Pierce County, Washington, USA. They lived in Steilacoom, Pierce, Washington, USA and later moved to Tacoma, Washington, USA where she passed away on November 27, 1956. His father Leonard was born on December 31, 1899 in Nekoosa, Wood, Wisconsin, USA and grew up in Port Edwards, Wood, Wisconsin, USA. After marrying Inez they family resided in Steilacoom, Pierce, Washington, USA where he worked as a paper maker at a paper mill. He passed away in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington, USA on September 26, 1971.

    Bob had siblings including Donald James Zurfluh (1925-2002) and Thomas Richard Zurfluh (1927-2006). He was a high school graduate of Lincoln High School. Upon his return from the war, Bob had a chance encounter with the President of PLC (now Pacific Lutheran University), who encouraged him to take advantage of the GI Bill and attend PLC. He graduated from PLC in 1949 with a degree in education.

After her passing, Robert re married on February 14, 2009 to Amy Cruz of Lakewood. Bob's life revolved around the Army, hunting, fishing, sports, and his cherished family. He delighted in sharing tales of hunting and fishing, eagerly engaging in discussions about the Mariners, Seahawks, and college sports. A prominent figure in Tacoma's baseball and softball scene, he played for many years and earned induction into the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-Timer's Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame in 1994. His contributions were recognized with the Washington Legion of Merit medal in 1987. Bob also found joy in dancing, showcasing his jitterbug skills well into the night, even in his later years.

    Robert D. Zurfluh The oldest of five children born to Leonard and Inez (Mason) Zurfluh, was born in Steilacoom on November 1, 1922. He passed away on October 23, 2011 at Madigan Hospital. A graduate of Lincoln High School, he was drafted into the Army for service in World War II. On November 8, 1943, just prior to shipping out to New Guinea, he married Mary Ann Overland, his high school sweetheart. Upon his return from the war, Bob had a chance encounter with the President of PLC (now Pacific Lutheran University), who encouraged him to take advantage of the GI Bill and attend PLC. After graduating in 1949 with a degree in education, Bob began an over 30 year career in education, starting with the DuPont school district and including stints with the Orting and Franklin Pierce school districts. He concluded his career in education at Carol Morgan School in the Dominican Republic. During that time, he also became a member of the Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Colonel. Bob and Mary Ann were blessed with three children, Michael, Lin, and Jan. The Army, hunting, fishing, sports, and his family were the staples of Bob's life. He enjoyed telling stories about hunting and fishing and was always ready to enter into discussion about the Mariners, the Seahawks, and college sports. He was a well-known Tacoma area baseball and softball player for many years. In 1994 he was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-Timer's Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame. He was the Washington Legion of Merit medal winner in 1987. He also enjoyed dancing, and was known to jitterbug well into the night, even in these last years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Don and Tom, his wife Mary Ann in 1997, and their son Mike in 1975, who at the time was a pilot with the US Navy. On February 14, 2009, he married Amy Cruz of Lakewood. He is survived by his wife Amy, sisters Jean James of Olympia and Mary Rash of Tacoma, and his daughters Lin Zurfluh of Seattle and Jan Colbrese (Mike) of Bellevue, as well as five grandsons - daughter Jan's sons Dane, Erik, and Garth Woldseth, and son Mike's children Karl and Steven Zurfluh. A celebration of Bob's life will held on November 1, 2011, 2 PM, at Fir Lane Memorial Park in Spanaway. Pub Date: 10/29/2011
