    Robert Earl Fountain (September 14, 1934 - December 22, 2010) Guest Book | Sign Guest Book | Send Private Condolences Robert Earl Fountain, age 76, of Selma, Al, passed away December 22, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents Grover and Kathleen Fountain and brothers, Grover Fountain Jr., Hubert Fountain and Wilmer Lee Fountain. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Fountain; sons, Terry Fountain, Ed (Elizabeth) Fountain, Dennis Fountain and Tracey Fountain; grandchildren, Pam Ballard, Allison Fountain and Susan Altman; great grandson, Kinston Ballard. Funeral services will be Monday, December 27, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Samson, AL, with Rev. Donny Earl officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Interment will be in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In 1934, in the year that Robert Earl Fountain was born, on June 6th, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was formed as a response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the continuing Great Depression. Previously, the states regulated the offering and sales of stocks - called "blue sky" laws. They were largely ineffective. Roosevelt created a group (one member was Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President Kennedy) who knew Wall Street well and they defined the mission and operating mode for the SEC. The new organization had broad and stringent rules and oversight and restored public confidence in the stock market in the United States.

In 1950, when he was 16 years old, on October 2, Charlie Brown appeared in the first Peanuts comic strip - created by Charles Schultz - and he was the only character in that strip. That year, Schultz said that Charlie was 4 years old, but Charlie aged a bit through the years.
