He married Linda Kay Wyland on September 18, 1971 in New Kent, New Kent County, Virginia and they later divorced on June 22, 1979 in Henrico, Henrico County. He had a child Lora Michelle Koch. Robert Koch died at age 76 years old on May 23, 2018 in Henrico County, and was buried on July 22, 2024 Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia 10300 Pridesville Rd, in Amelia Court House, Amelia County.

In 1941, in the year that Robert Fielding Koch was born, on December 7th, the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise aerial attack damaged 8 U.S. battleships (6 later returned to service), including the USS Arizona, and destroyed 188 aircraft. 2,402 American citizens died and 1,178 wounded were wounded. On December 8th, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on December 11th, Germany and Italy (allies of Japan) declared war on the United States. World War II was in full swing.
