In 1909, in the year that Robert G Holt was born, explorer Robert Peary, a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, claimed to have been the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. His claim has been disputed for over a century - some say that he ended up 60 miles from the North Pole. Peary was the only navigator on his team and he didn't submit his records for public review.

In 1915, at the age of just 6 years old, Robert was alive when the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. Subsequently, the French and British - as well as the United States when they entered World War 1 - developed and used lethal gas in war.
