He was married to Fay Elizabeth Startzel in 1960 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, and they were together until Robert's death on October 16, 2004 in Levittown, Bucks County. He had children Theresa Fay Distefano, Fay Elizabeth Parker, Lori Ann Hyjurick, Robert Raymond Startzel, and Karen Lynn Whittaker. Robert Startzel was buried on October 20, 2004 at Resurrection Cemetery 5201 Hulmeville Rd., in Bensalem.

Taking 5 years to build, the 4,200-foot-long suspension bridge was an engineering marvel of its time - 11 men died during construction.
