He married Flora Helen (Hopcraft) Baldry, and had children Norman Albert Baldry, Talana Hill (Baldry) Staggard, Ivy Helvetia Baldry, and Maie Agnes Baldry. Robert Baldry died at age 56 years old on May 21, 1919 in Dromana, Shire of Mornington Peninsula County.

In 1863, in the year that Robert John Baldry was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery. Her cargo and provisions were intact and she was used as a cargo vessel for another 12 years but the people onboard were never seen again
