  • Obituary

Kentucky Post---August 26, 2006 Robert Weichhand, designed machinery Robert J. Weichhand liked to say that he had worked for the R.A. Jones Co. in Crescent Springs longer than even the company president. It was true. Mr. Weichhand, of Crescent Springs, who died Thursday at 85, retired after 49 years with the company, which designs and makes packaging machinery. As engineering manager, he was in charge of all the machinery designs. He himself had patented many designs for the company. One day at work, he struck up a conversation with a receptionist in the company's sales and marketing department. A few years later, they were married. He and Barbara J. Smith Weichhand would remain married for 34 years. His intelligence and his generosity attracted her to him, she said. "He liked company," she said. "He liked to be around people and have fun." He started working for R.A. Jones before World War II, and left the company during the war to become a radio operator/gunner on a B-24 Superfortress. During his stint with the Army Air Corps, he participated in bombing runs in Italy and in the German Rhineland, earning the Silver Star and other honors. When he returned to civilian life, he helped organize the former Forest Hills Volunteer Fire Department in Latonia, and later became the fire chief. He also served as fire chief for the Taylor Mill Volunteer Fire Department. "He found that (fighting fires) exciting," his wife said. "That was in his younger days." He was also a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger. A daughter, Patricia Fangman, preceded him in death. Survivors other than his wife include a son, Anthony Weichhand of Atlanta; daughters, Rebecca Fettig of Cincinnati and Sylvia Johnson of Florence; a stepson, Jeffrey Crowe of Crestview Hills; a stepdaughter, Nancy Vagedes of Florence; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 9067, Louisville, Ky. 40209 or St. Elizabeth North Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling the arrangements.

In 1920, in the year that Robert Joseph Weichhand was born, Italian born factory worker Nicola Sacco and fish peddler Bartolomeo Vanzetti were picked up by police on May 5th in connection with the April 15th murder and robbery of a guard and a paymaster at the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company in South Braintree, Mass. Although in later years they were thought to be innocent, they were anarchists and were convicted of the crime and put to death.

In 1940, by the time he was 20 years old, on November 5th, President Franklin Roosevelt was elected to a third term, defeating Wendell Willkie of Indiana (a corporate lawyer). Roosevelt running for a third term was controversial. But the U.S. was emerging from the Great Recession and he promised that he would not involve the country in any foreign war (which of course changed when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor). Roosevelt defeated Willkie in the popular vote by 54.7 to 44.8% and in the Electoral College 449 to 82.
