Robert McLean Brittingham was born to John Garland Brittingham (1887 - 1945) and Roberta W. McLean (born 1891). His father was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and his mother was born in Wisconsin. He had one brother, Juan "John" Robert Brittingham (1912 - 1998). A veteran of World War II, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy in March of 1944 and served until April of 1946. Robert Brittingham married Ruth Ellen Tyler (1917 - 1991) in 1940 in California and they had two sons. He then married Jeanne Garland (1929 - 1998) in 1957 and they had one son. They divorced in April of 1972. Robert married one last time to Janice Burks Shook on October 28, 1972 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They didn't have any children.

He and Juan, his brother, sold the tile business, "Dal-Tile" in 1990, landing them on Forbes 400 with a family worth of half a billion dollars. According to the article, "The Bush Profiteers", "Robert and Jack Brittingham sold one of the nation's largest ceramic tile companies for $650 million in 1990. Robert Brittingham was convicted in 1993 for illegally dumping Dal-Tile lead wastes. A federal judge fined him $4 million dollars, then the largest environmental fine ever levied on an individual."
Personal Life & Family

On his World War II draft card, Robert was described as being 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 190 pounds. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and a "light brown" complexion. Robert married three times: To Ruth Ellen Tyler (1917 - 1991) in 1940 in California and they had two sons. He then married Jeanne Garland (1929 - 1998) in 1957 and they had one son. They divorced in April of 1972. Robert married one last time to Janice Burks Shook on October 28, 1972 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They didn't have any children.
