    He was the son of Robert McAliece and Nancy Manners. He Catherine Crawford (1810-1892) around 1829 in Northern Ireland. They arrived in Australia at Melbourne, Victoria on Nov 28, 1859, aboard the 'Ocean Chief'. At the time he was 48 and was traveling with his wife Catherine 47 at the time, and children Andrew 23, Rose Ann 21, Nancy 19, Margaret 16, John 11, Crawford 9, Mary 7, William 4. They were parents to children Charles (1830-1886), Robert (1832-1917), Andrew (1834-1916), Rose Anne Shanks (1837-1911), Agnes Nancy Montgomery (1840-1895), Margaret Lydeker (1843-1883), John (1847-1870), David (1849-1898), Crawford (1853-1938), Mary McDonald (1852-1917), and William McAliece (1855-1897).

In 1810, in the year that Robert McAliece was born, in October, King George III of the United Kingdom - King of England during the American Revolutionary War - was recognized as insane. Although he reigned until his death in 1820, he was mentally ill - the cause is unknown - and in 1810 regency was established to oversee his rule. His eldest son was recognized as Prince Regent.

In 1838, he was 28 years old when on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.
