He was in a relationship with Viola M.Tureaud, and had children Fred Joseph Higgason, Miriam Higgason, Corrine Higgason, and Helen Higgason. Robert Higgason died at age 70 years old on March 29, 1960 at Crosby Memorial Hospital in Picayune, Pearl River County, MS, and was buried on March 31, 1960 at Hope Mausoleum in New Orleans, Orleans County, LA.

In 1920, at the age of 31 years old, Robert was alive when Italian born factory worker Nicola Sacco and fish peddler Bartolomeo Vanzetti were picked up by police on May 5th in connection with the April 15th murder and robbery of a guard and a paymaster at the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company in South Braintree, Mass. Although in later years they were thought to be innocent, they were anarchists and were convicted of the crime and put to death.
