Robert Samuel Weddle is the youngest (and sole survivor) of seven children of Charles Leonard Weddle, Sr., and Montee Irene (Nelms) Weddle. In the order of birth, they were Wilson Nelms, Charles Leonard, Sr., Joe Tom, Lora Lee Weddle Reineman, Laurel Earline Weddle, and Frances Weddle Young.
Like many farm families during the Great Depression, our growing-up ywars were marked by material shortage and hard work. Our parents were not able to send us to college, but they gave use the inspiration to send ourselves. All seven of us, working to pay our own way, earned bachelor's degrees, and several obtained graduate degrees. Joe Tom, Lora Lee, and I served in the military during World War II, Lora Lee as an Army nurse assigned to a field hospital on the Pacific island of New Caledonia. All of us were at least moderately successful in our chosen field, some outstanding
To set the record straight, I bear the full name of my paternal grandfather, who died when I was quite young and never lived close enough to us that the identical names were ever confused. If this causes confusion for genealogists, I apologize, but there never seemed a reason to style myself Robert Samuel Weddle II.
