Robert Scholl was born in Steinbrück, in the community of Mainhardt (Geißelhardt) and was a politician in Württemberg. In the first World War he was an infantry soldier and a medic. In 1916, he married the nurse Magdalena Müller and they had six children: Inge (1917–1998), Hans (1918–1943), Elisabeth (1920–), Sophie (1921–1943), Werner (1922–1944), and Thilde (1925–1926). A critic of the Nazi regime, Scholl was sentenced to four months in prison in 1942 for allegedly calling Hitler the "scourge of God", and was also banned from his vocation. After the execution of his children Hans and Sophie in 1943 he was sentenced to 18 months for listening to foreign radio broadcasts. After the war, he was mayor of the city of Ulm from 1945 to 1948. In the 1950s he co-founded the Gesamtdeutsche Volkspartei (All German People's Party) with Gustav Heinemann and Johannes Rau. Much of the rest of his life was devoted to preserving the legacy of his two children Hans and Sophie who were executed for their courageous resistance to the Nazi regime.
