  • Introduction

    US Congressman. A native of Sacramento, California, Matsui was born of Japanese ancestry. Elected to represent California's 3rd and 5th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, Matsui served from 1979 to 2003. Also served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from California in 2000. Matsui was also later involved in several other parties and organizations. Matsui passed away on January 1, 2005, at the Bethesda Naval Hospital at the age of 63, from pneumonia and Myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare stem cell disorder.

The Matsui family was part of the larger Japanese American community, which faced intense discrimination, particularly during World War II. Just months after Robert's birth, his family was among the thousands of Japanese Americans relocated to internment camps due to Executive Order 9066. They were sent to the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in California. His family’s experience in the Tule Lake internment camp profoundly impacted Matsui's outlook on civil rights, leading him to fight for justice for all marginalized groups. Matsui’s empathy for marginalized communities and civil rights is often directly credited to this experience.

    Matsui earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his law degree from Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco in 1966.

    Robert Takeo Matsui was a respected U.S. Congressman who represented California's Sacramento area in the House of Representatives for over two decades. Before entering Congress, Robert Matsui practiced as a tax attorney. He established a private practice specializing in tax law, helping individuals and businesses navigate complex tax codes and regulations. While in Congress, Robert used his legal experience in tax matters to contribute to issues related to finance, tax policy, and trade. In 1971, Robert was elected to the Sacramento City Council where he served until his election to Congress in 1978.

    Robert married a fellow Japanese American from California named Doris Okada, who later succeeded her husband in Congress following his death. Doris was appointed to fill his congressional seat in 2005 and continued to serve as the U.S. Representative for California's 6th congressional district. Doris has been a prominent advocate for healthcare, environmental issues, and technology innovation, carrying on the Matsui family’s dedication to public service. Together, Robert and Doris were known as a committed and politically engaged couple, both deeply connected to their community. Robert and Doris Matsui had a son named Brian Matsui who has largely stayed out of the public eye compared to his parents, but has pursued a successful career as an attorney. Brian works in Washington, D.C., where he specializes in appellate litigation.
