    Roger completed his World War II draft registration in Hannibal, Missouri, where he was living at the time. He was 18 and living with his father, Levi. He had just been discharged from the Navy and was 6 feet, 1.25 inches tall, weighed 150 pounds, and had brown eyes and brown hair. His complexion was "dark". He also had a scar through his right eyebrow and 2 scars on his right arm. While he was serving in the United States Navy, Roger attained the rank of S1 (Aboard ship or ashore, the seaman 1st class is often called a “striker,” because he's learning a skill through on-the-job training as a seaman in the navy, an airman, a hospital man, a fireman or a construction man.) He was a veteran of World War II and because of his service was buried in Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In 1927, in the year that Roger C Arthur was born, the first "talkie" (a movie with music, songs, and talking), The Jazz Singer, was released. Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".
