David was our ship's librarian as well as assisting the protestant and catholic chaplains. He had a degree from the University of Chicago, and he and I sometimes went on liberty together, e.g., we spent some time at the Acropolis in Athens. He taught me much about ancient history, fabrics and clothing, and I found him to be a very interesting man. We were discharged simultaneously in June of 1955, and we took a train to Chicago from Jacksonville FL. Several years later, about 1963, I ran into David in a Chicago restaurant; he was working in a shop specializing in rare books and maps. I helped him pack in preparation for a move to his partner's home, a Chicago doctor. I called him about 2002 and he was very upset over the death of his partner, and I sent him a poem by Auden. I have fond memories of this even-keeled gentle soul who taught me much about the world and life.
