In 1907, in the year that Roland Hanson was born, in October, over a 3 week period, the New York stock exchange fell almost 50% from the previous year's high mark. Public panic ensued and there were runs on banks since the U.S. was in the middle of a recession. J.P. Morgan offered his own fortune to back the banks and he was followed by other financiers. This temporarily shored up the banking system, stopping the immediate panic. All of this led to the creation of the Federal Reserve.

In 1926, by the time he was 19 years old, on October 31st, Harry Houdini died in Michigan. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.

Presidents Like You've Never Seen Them Before
While John Hanson (President of the United States in Congress Assembled) is considered by some historians as the first President of the U.S., General George Washington is generally recognized as President #1 since he began his term after the Constitution went into effect. From George Washington to Joe Biden, there have been 46 U.S. presidencies sworn into the top political office, all men. These are photos of Presidents in circumstances that you may not have seen before - from family gatherings to Franklin Delano Roosevelt getting ready to mount a horse.
