3 Memories, Stories & Photos about Ronald

My Father
I am his son, Justin Earl McGuffin: born during his marriage to Linda Sue Brennan, my mother.
I never had the chance to know him. I met him once, and for a short time. Wish I could have had a chance to know him. Especially now that I am a man. And he has two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Perhaps in the new system of things to come.

Ronald McGuffin was a proud Texan, a “cowboy loving” western artist, and, he was my father. I grew up watching him work on many of his statues and paintings while I played outside or sat drawing, hoping to one day be an artist like him. His most notable works were achieved during the 1970s- 1980s. It has been many years now and I am grown and I now must watch his work crumble and fade. Today, I believe the waning of his pictures, murals and statues across the great state of Texas collectively paint a greater picture of a bygone era that has given way to one faster and more aloof. An era in which folks don’t pause for a sweet iced tea on the porch with their neighbors, drink from the hose, or lie back on the lazy river bank and enjoy the slow summer days getting lost in thought as the clouds roll by. So there is a whisper of sadness for me as Daddy’s murals slowly fade from sight. They’ve become a metaphor declaring that which is lost to the ravages of time. As I peruse all that is left of my father’s legacy I am thankful for the reminder of simpler times and proud of his contribution of a visual of a special time of “beans and cornbread” where cowboys thrived, herding cattle in the West Texas sun.

Career
Ronald Earl McGuffin was my father.

Ronald’s passion and long-time career was western art. Commissioning work from the greater Texas and beyond, to castles in Canada, his medium was oil paint and an empty canvas of any size.

His talent stretched his imagination, which had him scaling interior and exterior walls of small businesses and billboards with a paint brush, as well as sculpting large statues. His largest and most popular art resided in San Antonio, Tx. in the 1970’s where he built a statue of a tall cowboy holding a saddle. Situated on top of a well known boot company, the statue became a popular landmark for the state of Texas for decades. In the mid 90’s, the boot store was corroded and later demolished along with the statue.
