  • Introduction

Although I didn't know Ruben well, he did have a powerful and lingering impact on my life. When I arrived at Horlick High School, I was Sophomore. Ruben was a Senior. I was dead set on becoming an Actor and immediately took every course in theatre and choir that I could possibly take. I met Ruben in the Choir-room on my first day at school. Our's was a school that focused on and highly respected the performing arts. So you HAD to be very good in order to work your way up to the elite courses. Ruben had already accomplished this, beautifully. He had swagger and seemed to know that he was a damn good singer, actor, dancer, performer! He was the first person I ever knew, who was truly handsome...bordering on beautiful. He was the first Guy I ever saw, who had that type of natural charm and charisma. I wanted to be his friend so much! But I was too awed by his talent and presence to introduce myself. I remember thinking that I wished I had whatever it was that made him so special. I was shocked when I heard a rumor around 2000, that he had passed on. I couldn't even believe for a moment , that he could possibly be gone! In my head, I always thought he'd make it to Broadway one day! I planned to be first in line for tickets. I'm saddened deeply that he is gone. Even though I barely knew him and I'm almost sure he probably never noticed the dark skinned, short-afroed choir & theatre geek who constantly looked up to him like he hung the Moon. I stole acting and singing keys from him that I'm sure I still use today on tv and film. I have to say, Ruben was not just liked. He was LOVED. Almost anyone who got near to this talented young man, fell under his spell. You just WANTED to be around him! He was THAT GREAT. This is why I was so startled to look him up (trying to find out the reason that he tragically, died so young) and found that NO ONE had written ANYTHING about him! All those friends and fellow performers....and no one thought to write anything telling how absolutely awesome and amazing Ruben Trinidad was. Well, Ruben Trinidad was a very special, talented, handsome, friendly young man who died long before his time. I'm sad that I didn't and now, cannot have him for a friend, on this side of glory. But..although he never even knew it, he honestly inspired me back in high school. In fact, he still remains a strong force in my memory. And it's those memories of Ruben, that STILL inspire me today.
