Ruby Baker's History: 1914 - 2000

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Ruby Baker was my great grandmother. She had the most beautiful soul I have ever had the privilege to know. I spent every summer with her, until I was 15. She loved me unconditionally, and I loved her more than i can express. She would put a record on, and we would lay on the couches in her living room, just talking. She would tell me stories from her childhood. Sometimes repeating the same stories, but I didn't care. I would give anything to be laying on that couch with her right now. She passed away when I was 16. I didn't get to say goodbye, which made losing her almost unbearable. That was 18 years ago, yet I still think of her all the time. She was the glue that held our family together. When she passed away, we all drifted so far from each other. In a couple weeks we will finally have a family reunion. I'm hoping she will be there with us. I was finally able to make this happen. I hope she is looking down on me, proud of the woman and mother I've become. I love you gramma. So very much..... Cassie

In 1914, in the year that Ruby Baker was born, in only his second big-screen appearance, Charlie Chaplin played the Little Tramp, his most famous character. The silent film was made in January and released the following year. Of the character, Chaplin said: "On the way to the wardrobe I thought I would dress in baggy pants, big shoes, a cane and a derby hat. I wanted everything a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large." The moustache was added to age his 24-year-old face without masking his expressions.

In 1926, by the time she was merely 12 years old, on October 31st, Harry Houdini died in Michigan. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
