My father Al T. Stephenson pastored Beverly Hills Alliance Church on the North side of Detroit from 1979 to 1982. Ruby Batzold was one of the most faithful members. She was a very sweet older lady with white hair. I was 11 years old at the time, and I used to sit beside her on Sunday mornings. She would always have several rolls of Life Savers in her purse, and she would always offer me a Life Saver. I knew that she had had a hard marriage, because her husband Cy gave her a hard time for her Christian beliefs. But she refused to leave him, and continued praying for him. The day before he died in 1984, he softened, asked Ruby to forgive him for being unkind to her for so many years, and he asked Jesus Christ into his heart. The next day he went home to be with the Lord.
