Ruby Mathison was my Father's mother, my Grandmother.
She loved animals, enjoyed long walks in the country, picked wild strawberries, she could easily identify all woodland and meadow wildflowers. Her mother died of tuberculosis when she was sixteen years old. She met her husband Hans, when he was ill and she was the nurse who cared for him. Hans and Ruby lived in Brooklyn, NY raising their two boys Fred and Harold.
During the fifties they established themselves in upstate NY. Trying a hand at chicken farming they named their homestead " Melody Acres"
Ruby was an excellent cook, writer, reader stamp and coin collector, mother to two great pets Prince and Frisky.
She was a big General Hospital fan, never missed a single episode.
Relocating to Stamford , Connecticut in the seventies I recall the two of them holding hands as they walked down the street.
Ruby was spiritual choosing to practice her Catholic faith, though Hans was Lutheran.
Sadly, she was diagnosed with bone cancer shortly before her death in 1980.
They relocated to Dover, Delaware where Fred lived at the end of her life.
.She had a life full of sadness, happiness, and many small joys as well as sorrows.
I was so inspired by her, she lives in my heart and will forever.
She would say we were kindred spirits.
