Ruby May Trotter, 94, of Paris passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at her daughter's residence in Johntown, Texas. She was born August 17, 1920 in Paris a daughter of Roy and Pearl Gaines Stewart. Mrs. Trotter was an L.V.N. having worked at Lamar Medical, Paris Sanitarium, McCuistion Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph's Hospital. After retiring she was the nurse at the Girls Scout Camp. She was a long-time member of Oak Park United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil E. (Bobby) Trotter, her parents, her brothers and sisters Alfred Stewart of Paris, Katherine Harvey of Lubbock, her best friend Alice (Judy) Stewart of Paris, Irene Stout of Paris Dan Stewart of Dallas, Sarah Coker of Paris, nephew J.W. Stout of Lubbock and niece Barbara Harvey of Lubbock. Mrs. Trotter is survived by son James Ray Trotter of Taos, New Mexico and Paris, daughter Carol Horn and husband Roger of Johntown, grandchildren Patrick Trotter of Ft. Worth, Ben Sewell of Boston, Mass., Grace Ann Brim of San Antonio, Mamie Trotter of Denver, Colo., Rubie Trotter of Albuquerque, N.M., brother Roy Stewart Jr. of Paris,six nieces and thirteen nephews.

After the 18th Amendment was ratified and selling alcohol became illegal, saloons closed and speakeasies took their place. Speakeasies, also called a blind pig or blind tiger, were "so called because of the practice of speaking quietly about such a place in public, or when inside it, so as not to alert the police or neighbors". There were a lot of them and they were very popular. And where saloons often prohibited women, they were encouraged at speakeasies because of the added profits.
