Russell C Sciolino was born on December 10, 1913 to parents Ignatius "John" Sciolino and Concetta Leone. He was white of Italian heritage. His mother Concetta Leone was born around 1882 in Valledolmo Sicily Italy. She married John in 1908 and immigrated to the US in 1913. She passed away on November 26, 1946. His father Ignatius was born on October 29, 1881 in Valledolmo, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy and immigrated to the US in 1912. He lived in Buffalo, New York and worked as a cement finisher. He passed away on August 1, 1971.

He had siblings including Mary L. Sciolino (1908-1998), Charles R. Sciolino (1909-1930), Anna Sciolino (1912-), Filipina Sciolino (1918-1933), Rose Sciolino (1922-), and Josephine Sciolino (1924-2012). At the time of his enlistment, Russell had completed at least two years of high school.
