    Russell was an auburn brown haired and brown eyed Caucasian male of Ukrainian and Polish ancestry. This gave him subtle epicanthic folds, later his hair would turn grey and thinning but he never lost his smile, personableness and friendly sense of humor.

    Russell Tarby was born in Auburn, New York. He was married in Liverpool, New York to Mary Egloff. He was Roman Catholic but fairly agnostic in his personal views on religion. He was of Polish and Ukrainian descent and spoke the languages fairly well. He ran Tarbe Burgers for most of his lifetime and was very personable despite being neurotic and awkward about giving the wrong impression like many Americans in his day. He served in the Allied Naval Forces in World War II, saying in an interview "I didn`t have to think all that hard about what I wanted to do with my life after high school `cause the Japanese pretty much made up my mind for me" and shot down many German U-boats.

    He was baptized Roman Catholic although especially during the war he often struggled with his faith and described himself as "believing in God and Christ but largely agnostic on the authority of organized religion".

    Served in the US Naval Forces during World War II. Most of his brothers also served in either the Army or Navy around that time.

    Russell had a daughter Laurie and two sons Russell and James. Russell Jr. was the firstborn, Laurie the second born and James the youngest. He also had two grandchildren Jessica who was born while his health was in decline in the 1980s and Bobby who was born 2 years after he died. Bobby was given the middle name Russell in memory of my grandfather.

In 1922, in the year that Russell Tarby was born, on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.
