Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

My grandmother Ruth was a vibrant, social and stimulating woman. She had only one child, my mother, in 1927, with her first husband, Lt. Col. Cyril Q. Marron, who died in WWII. Her 2nd marriage to Frank Singer Sr was in 1949.

  • Ethnicity & Family History

Ruth's father came from a Pennsylvania Dutch family who had been on the continent since the early 1700s. Her grandfather, Charles Baker Schumacher, had been the first professional photographer in Galion OH, and eventually became mayor. His mother's family had changed their name from "Becker" to "Baker" in order to sound less German. Her mother was born Mary Cunningham, in tiny Millville NY. Her parents died when she was young and she was taken by wagon to live with her older brother, Will Cunningham, to Chicago. She attended a girls' school and was boarded with the family of another girl, who were very cruel to her, although I don't know more details. Mary was often called "Mae" and embroidered some items with that name.
  • Early Life & Education

Ruth was born in Ohio, but soon her family moved to Chicago, where her father, Wilbert Allen Schumacher, managed a stockyard. By high school her family was living in Yonkers and her father was the traffic manager for the United Fruit Company. She graduated from Yonkers high school and then Wellesley College, where she majored in art and literature.
  • Religious Beliefs

Ruth was born into a non-religious Protestant family but converted to Catholicism in order to marry her first husband. She never practiced as a Catholic. Her daughter attended mass without her.
  • Military Service

As an officer's wife up until and throughout WWII, Ruth was a fierce patriot and loved military life. They traveled throughout the US and to Hawaii, China and the Philippines. She and their only child, Irene, were evacuated from the Philippines just before the Japanese invaded; Cyril - first assistant to the JAG - was given the option to return to the US, but chose to stay. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and died after years as a POW.
  • Professional Career

As an officer's wife, Ruth was very busy. She and Cyril ("Bud") and little Irene were stationed in Nebraska, Georgia, China, Hawaii and the Philippines before WWII broke out. She and Bud were married in the Philippines in a lavish USMC wedding.
  • Personal Life & Family

Ruth was a painter, sculptor and ardent needleworker. She sewed clothes and did intricate needlepoint. She was involved with the Red Cross and loved to entertain, first as an officer's wife and later as the wife of Frank Singer, a successful entrepreneur in Peekskill, NY.

2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Ruth

How my grandparents met
Ruth and Cyril were both at a "mixer" designed for Wellesley and West Point students to socialize. He approached her with a tray and said, "Would you like a nut?" She gasped and said, "Oh, this is so sudden!" and their senses of humor bonded them immediately.
