In 1812, in the year that Samson Wearne was born, on February 27th, the English poet Lord Byron gave his first address as a member of the British House of Lords. He spoke in defense of the Luddite violence against industrialism in his home county of Nottinghamshire. Luddites were primarily textile workers and weavers who thought that machinery was being used as a way to keep workers from achieving fair practices and wages.

In 1822, Samson was merely 10 years old when on May 26th, 116 people died in the Grue Church fire - the biggest fire disaster in Norway's history. On Pentecost, the church was packed and a fire broke out on the outer wall of the southern transept. Within 15 minutes, the whole church was on fire and it burned to the ground. Almost half of the dead were under 16 and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
