Samuel C. Leek was born on April 18, 1809 in Chester Township, Morris County, New Jersey United States to Daniel Jessup Leek and Temperance Corwithe, and had siblings Eleanor Leek, James v. Leek, Anna Maria Leek, and Patty Ann Leek. He married Minerva Topping, and they had a child Mary Budd Leek. He would also marry Mary Ann Budd, and they had a child Daniel Budd Leek. Samuel Leek died at age 64 years old on August 18, 1873 in Chester Township.

She had developed a technique for weaving straw with silk and thread to make hats. While her hats were popular at first, fashion changed and she died penniless.
