He had siblings Eliza Edney, Sarah Jane Edney, Annie Edney, Nellie Edney, John James Edney, Percy Edney, David Edney, Joseph Edney, and William Edney. Samuel Edney married Henrietta Ellen Lord in 1907, and died at age 40 years old on May 14, 1922 in Saint Kilda, Port Phillip City County.

In 1881, in the year that Samuel Charles Edney was born, on April 28th, Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Jail in New Mexico. He killed James Bell and Robert Ollinger in the escape and then stole a horse and rode out of town. On July 14th, Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid in Billy's friend's home near Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
