Samuel Hodges Zartman 1838 - 1906

Samuel Hodges Zartman was born on June 12, 1838 in Jamestown, Greene County, Ohio United States to Samuel Zartman and Margaret (Crumrine) Zartman, and had siblings Elizabeth Ann (Mariah) Zartman, Harriet Zartman, James Winans Zartman, Eliza (Zartman) Schroeder, Adelia (Zartman) Spahr, Miranda (Zartman) Bergdoll, William Issac Zartman, Charles Henry Zartman, and Daniel Edgar Zartman. He married Annie Elizabeth (Long) Zartman, and had children Albert Zartman, Lucy Zartman, Mary (Zartman) Watson, and Foss Zartman. Samuel Zartman died at age 68 years old on August 29, 1906 in Jamestown.

In 1838, in the year that Samuel Hodges Zartman was born, on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.
