In 1848, in the year that Samuel Hood was born, on November 1st, the first medical school for women - but founded by a man - opened in Boston. Called the Boston Female Medical College, and later merging with the Boston University School of Medicine, women could officially attend medical classes and be trained as physicians.

In 1875, he was 27 years old when on March 1st, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The Act prohibited racial discrimination in both public accommodations and jury duty. Opposed by the public, the "public accommodations" sections of the Act were overturned by the Supreme Court eight years later.
