In 1814, in the year that Samuel L. Biddle was born, in August, the British captured Washington, DC and set fire to the White House and the Capitol building. President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, couldn't return to the White House when the British were driven out. It wasn't until 1817 that the White House became habitable again.
In 1870, on October 6th, Rome became the capital of the unified states of the Italian Peninsula - the newly created Kingdom of Italy.
In 1907, the second Hague peace conference was called by Russia in the Netherlands. While nothing was settled regarding the matter of peace among nations, many resolutions were passed (and accepted by many nations) about the conventions of war - especially the protection of noncombatants.
In 1932, on February 27th, actress Elizabeth Taylor was born in London. Her parents were Americans living in London and when she was 7, the family moved to Los Angeles. Her first small part in a movie was in There's One Born Every Minute in 1942 but her first starring role was in National Velvet in 1944. She became as famous for her 8 marriages (to 7 people) as she was for her beauty and films.
In 1997, on August 31st, Princess Diana of Great Britain was killed when her car crashed into a pillar in the tunnel under the Pont de l'Alma bridge in Paris. The car she was riding in was trying to evade the paparazzi but it was also discovered later that the driver of the car, who was also killed, had three times the legal limit of alcohol which likely contributed to the accident.
