She was born in Sandhurst, Victoria and had siblings Frederick James (1866-1935), Alice (1867-1933), Lucy, George (1870-1870), George Walter (1872-1895), William Henry (1874-1963), David (1876-1955), and Jonathan Bowman (1877-1877). She married William Pearce Chrisfield (1877-1972) in 1903 in Victoria, Australia. The couple lived in Brunswick, Victoria and had children Doris May (1904-1989), Alice Merna (born 1906), William Dudley (born 1908), and James Eric Chrisfield (1915-1915).

In 1892, Sarah was just 12 years old when on October 5th, the Dalton Gang was shot. The Gang was attempting to rob two banks - simultaneously - in Coffeyville Kansas but word spread of the robberies and townspeople with guns greeted them when they left the banks. Four members of the gang were killed - only Emmett Dalton survived his wounds and spent 14 years in prison.
