    Sarah S Earner was my father's mother. She was born Sarah Sophia Freas and married my Grandfather, Joseph R Earner. They resided in Dansville, NY and had 1 son, James Anthony Earner and 2 daughters, Isabelle Earner Wadams and Mary Earner McKinney. They had 7 Grandchildren and 17 Great- grandchildren. They were wonderful grandparents and deeply missed.

In 1911, in the year that Sarah S Earner was born, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire occurred, one of the deadliest industrial disasters in U.S. history. 146 workers (123 women and 23 men, many of them recent Jewish and Italian immigrants) died from the fire or by jumping to escape the fire and smoke. The garment factory was on the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of a building in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Doors to stairwells and exits had been locked in order to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to prevent theft, so they couldn't escape by normal means when the fire broke out. Due to the disaster, legislation was passed to protect sweatshop workers.

In 1949, at the age of 38 years old, Sarah was alive when on April 4th, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was established. Twelve nations originally signed the North Atlantic Treaty - the United States, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Portugal. Greece, Turkey, and West Germany later joined. Today, there are 26 nations in NATO.
