Sarah Spellacy of Rahway, Union County, NJ was born on March 1, 1887 in Dublin, Dublin City County, Dublin Ireland to William Bryne and Elizabeth Bryne. She had siblings Mary Ann Coffey and Elizabeth Sinnott. Sarah Spellacy married Michael Spellacy, and died at age 84 years old in October 1971.

In 1887, in the year that Sarah Spellacy was born, on January 20th, the US Senate gave the US Navy the right to lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base. Pearl Harbor is on the island of Oahu, a part of the Hawaiian Islands. The Navy was given direction to maintain "a coaling and repair station" at the harbor.

In 1896, by the time she was merely 9 years old, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.
