Saul's father was a cobbler. He grew up in Kansas City, MO. A violinist, he graduated with a music degree and headed out on tour with a Chautauqua company, seeing much of the western US. He met cellist Marjorie Von Staden, another company member, while on tour, and they fell in love, marrying on July 6, 1930 in Franklin, TN. They raised two daughters, Joanne (born 6/29/1931), and Sandra (born 12/9/1935). Together, Saul and Marjorie were founding members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Saul finished his career as General Manager of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and they retired to Albuquerque, NM.
