Sean Charles Harrison's History: 1964 - 2010

  • Introduction

Sean was 1 year older than me and always served as my protector. When ever any person dared to put a hand on me or threaten to he was always there to make sure I didn't get hurt. Sean was extremely popular, girls that never got along with me would always try to be my friend when they met my brother Sean. Sean was witty, active, colorful and full of life. He was always well dressed and well groomed. He embraced the Indian in him by letting his hair grow long and wearing it in Native American styles. In high school he place feathers on the end of his braid. What made that funny is that it was one of those roach clips from the 1970's that had the feathers attached. Sean's childhood wasn't easy (nor was any of us Harrison kids) although we experienced the same abusive situation Sean got it a little worse for trying to protect me, his baby sister. Our mother was harder on Sean than us girls. For some reason she acted as if she resented him, she would often send him away to juvenile hall and group homes for months at a time. Granted Sean was not exactly a law abiding citizen but he was not brought up in a balanced environment and he did what he had to do to survive emotionally. He endured physical, sexual and emotional abuse from both our parents. He made his way with the burden of having an alcoholic father and a severely bipolar mother. After our parents were divorced when Sean was about 3 or 4 our mother got custody of us. When Sean became a young teenager 11 or 12 he tried to take on the role of "man of the house". We had an older brother who was at least 12 years older than us (mom favored him). But his idea of being a role model was to be in and out of prison and strung out on drugs. Sean never expressed any sign of resentment to me for the unjust parents we had. He continued to keep on truckin' Unfortunately in the background he was slipping deeper and deeper into the world of heroin. I moved out of our home town for over 15 years and hardly ever heard from Sean. When I returned I ran into him by accident. He was still the older brother that loved me unconditionally but he didn't appear to be that superhero I was accustomed to. In fact it he now looked as if he needed me to protect him from the elements that needed to be fought off. We began staying in touch and being a regular entity in each others lives. One day while Sean was visiting me he said, "Trudy , one day this stuff is going to kill me." And then he shot up. I was often torn between enabling his habit or helping to make him well. Although Sean did not die of a drug overdose or anything he did die as a result of being beat to death with a lead pipe to the head as a result of an argument over drugs. The man that killed Sean got away free because the Oakland Police Department ruled his death as an aneurism brought on by extreme drug use.
