Silas Crowe of Yarr Australia was born in 1882 in Rushworth, VIC to Elizabeth (Stone) Crowe and Thomas Crowe. He had siblings Ethel "Ettie" Mary (Crowe) Pettifer, Henry Charles Crowe, and William Arthur Crowe. Silas Crowe married Ruby Crowe ( Cheesley, and died at age 82 years old in 1964 in Yarrawonga.

In 1882, in the year that Silas Crowe was born, on March 22nd, the Edmunds Act - passed by Congress - made polygamy a felony. The Act also banned "bigamous" relationships and "unlawful cohabitation", making it illegal for polygamists and those who simply lived together without marrying to vote, be on a jury, or hold a public office.

In 1901, at the age of 19 years old, Silas was alive when Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States. TR, as he was known, had been Vice-President for 6 months when President William McKinley was assassinated. At age 42, he became the youngest President to serve although John Kennedy, at age 43, was the youngest President elected. He was a popular progressive and was elected to a second term in 1904 as a Republican, winning 56.4% of the popular vote and 336 electoral votes.
