  • Professional Career

    The United States military classified his civilian occupation when he entered the service as being "Salesperson". Later, Simon was a professor of art and design at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was also the former chairman of the university's department of art. From 1951 until 1965, he had operated a Los Angeles furniture and interior design firm. He also taught at several colleges in the area and from 1963 to 1965, he was the chairman of the design laboratory at the California Institute of Art. According to a classmate and former business partner, "he designed computers, sporting equipment and a lot of furniture". For two years, in 1964 and 1965, he taught at the Technion in Haifa, Israel.

    Born on November 12th, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois Simon Daniel Steiner was one of three sons of Samuel Steiner (1890 - 1949) and Freda Greenfield (1895 - 1976). His brothers were Melvin and Paul. On his 1940 World War II draft card, Simon described himself as being 5 feet 9 inches tall. He weighed 192 pounds and had brown hair and a "light brown" complexion. Simon Steiner married Sylvia K. Robins but they divorced in July of 1967 in Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death, he was married to an art professor at Rosary College, Frances. He was also survived by four daughters: Rochelle, Laura, Judi, and Elyse; one son, Stephen; and a granddaughter.

In 1916, in the year that Simon D Steiner was born, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.

In 1947, Simon was 31 years old when in June, the Marshall Plan was proposed to help European nations recover economically from World War II. It passed the conservative Republican Congress in March of 1948. After World War I, the economic devastation of Germany caused by burdensome reparations payments led to the rise of Hitler. The Allies didn't want this to happen again and the Marshall Plan was devised to make sure that those conditions didn't arise again.
