Sitting Bull | Lakota Holy Man, Chief
Sitting Bull was a Lakota holy man and chief who was killed by Indian agency police while attempting to arrest him for his support of the Ghost Dance.

He was a valiant warrior and led many battles for his people but he also was a performer in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, reportedly earning $50 a week.

You should read up on him, he's a fascinating man.

Sitting Bull is his Anglicized name. His Lakota Sioux name was Tatonka Iyotake. He was a shaman/medicine man; but he was not a chief. His wisdom and intelligence provided him with a tremendous respect of the chiefs of the Sioux Nation. He was a key member of the chiefs' council who considered him the "Chief of chiefs," an honorary designation.

Many of our family members thought that he was part of our family tree. I studied his history for two-three years. He has no direct connection other than being a human being or our human race... six degrees of separation.

I might add that my fourth generation grandmother, Susannah nee Sullivan Bull was the daughter of the Jasper County, Georgia Creek tribe. Her mother taught her how to make natural remedies from herbs, roots, etc. She taught her daughter, Martha Bull, those skills. My fourth generation grandfather and husband of Susannah, Robert Bull, was a field surgeon under the command of Colonel Andrew Jackson during the Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812). He taught her surgical skills. So Martha Bull became a doctor in the southwest, also making her own medicines.

About the same time, another Martha Bull, daughter of Ole Bull, an internationally known violinist, was a formally trained doctor in the northeast United States. What a coincidence!
