In 1910, in the year that Socrates Costa was born, Halley's comet, which returns past the earth every 75 - 76 years was observed photographically for the first time. Two fortuitous events occurred - photography had been invented since the last time the comet had passed and the comet was relatively close. There was panic because one astronomer claimed that the gas from its tail "would impregnate the atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet." People bought gas masks, "anti-comet pills" and "anti-comet umbrellas".

In 1936, when he was 26 years old, on November 3rd, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected to a second term. He ran against Republican Governor Alf Landon (Kansas), defeating Landon in the popular vote by 60.8% to 36.5%. Vermont and Maine were the only two states in which Landon won. John Nance Garner IV became the Vice-President in this election.

First Responders: Policemen & Policewomen
From traffic control to crowd control, police men and women have always been on the front lines protecting their communities. These photos, dating from the 1800's through the early 1900's, are of those who have sworn to serve and protect. In some ways, a lot has changed but the duties of these men and women have remained the same. Wouldn't it be amazing if New York City's traffic today were like the 1911 photo below?
