Solomon Hannant 1838 - 1900

Solomon Hannant of Brunswick Australia was born in 1838 to William Hannant. He had siblings Sarah Hannant, Mary Anne Hannant, Elizabeth Hannant, Maria Hannant, and William Hannant. He married Ellen Holland Hannant, and had a child George William S Hannant. Solomon Hannant died at age 62 years old in 1900.

In 1838, in the year that Solomon Hannant was born, on January 11th in New Jersey, Samuel Morse and two others first publicly demonstrated Morse's new invention - the telegraph. Patented by Morse in 1837, the electrical telegraph used a code developed by him and his assistant, Samuel Vail, and sent a message two miles. In 1844, Morse broadcast from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland the message "What hath God wrought" and the telegraph took off.

In 1859, when he was 21 years old, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
