. 340(IX) Anthony (3), son of William (2) Stoddard, was the immigrant ancestor, and came to Boston about 1639. He was admitted a freeman in 1640 and was a leading citizen. He was deputy to the general court in 1650-59-60, and during twenty successive years from 1665 to 1684. He died March 16, 1686-87. He married (first) Mary Downing, daughter of Hon. Emanuel and Lucy Downing, and sister of Sir George, afterward Lord George Downing. He married (second) Barbara, widow of Captain Joseph Weld, of Roxbury. Motto: "Festina Lente" — "Be in haste but not in a hurry. In the office of Heraldry, England, the origin of the Stoddard family is thus given:"William Stoddard came from Normandy to England, A. D. 1066, with William the Conqueror, who was his cousin. Of his descendants we find record of Rukard Stoddard, of Nottingham, Kent, near Eltham, about seven miles from London Bridge, where was located the family estate of about four hundred acres, which was in possession of the family in 1490, how much before is not known, and continued until the death of Nicholas Stoddard, a bachelor, in 1765. From him the line is: Thomas Stoddard of Royston; John Stoddard of Gundon; William Stoddard of Royston; John Stoddard of Royston; Anthony Stoddard of London; Gideon Stoddard of London; Anthony Stoddard of London; William Stoddard of London. He emigrated from England and came to Boston about 1639. He was made a freeman in 1640, was deputy in 1650-59-60, and for twenty years successively from 1665 to 1684. He married (first) Mary, daughter of Emanuel Downing, of Salem, who was admitted to the church there November 4, 1638, and sister of Sir George, afterward Lord Downing. Children: Solomon, Samson and Simeon. He married (second) Barbara, widow of Captain Joseph Weld, of Roxbury, by whom he had Sarah and Stephen. He married (third) Christian ————. [ ......The English genealogical works which attempt to give the ancestry of Sir George Downing, baronet, give it erroneously. The error seems first to have been promulgated by Anthony a Wood in his Athenae Oxoniensis, published 1691-2, where, in an account of Dr. Calybute Downing, the Puritan writer, son of Calybute Downing of Shennington, Gloucestershire, Sir George is called his son. The error has been copied into several Baronetages. Dr. Downing's ancestry has been carried back through his grandfather, Arthur, of Lexham in Norfolk, to his great-grand-father Geoffrey Downing of Norwich, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Wingfield. There are no indications of a relationship between this family and that of George Downing of Ipswich, Suffolk, who, as Mr. Waters shows, was father of Emanuel, the father of Sir George. Savage names Mary, wife of Anthony Stoddard ; James ; Anne, wife of Capt. Joseph Gardner and afterwards of Gov. Simon Bradstreet ; John ; and Dorcas, as other children of Emanuel Downing ; and there was probably also a son Joshua (Mass. Hist. Coll. 4th S. vi. 79). Emanuel Downing announces his intention to leave New England in the fall of 1654 with Gen. Sedgwick (Ibid. p. 84). He was living as late as Sept. 6, 1658, in Edinburgh (Ibid. p. 86). His wife was living in England, June 27, 1662 (Ibid. p. 544). The place and date of death of neither are known. Interesting letters from Emanuel Downing and other members of his family, are printed in the volume of the Mass. Hist. Coll. cited.Henry Downing, father of Col. Adam Downing, distinguished as an officer in William lll.'s army in Ireland, may have been, as represented by Burke (Ext. and Dorm. Baronetage, ed. 1844, p. 163 ; Landed Gentry, ed. 1853, i. 453), a son of Dr. Calybute. We find no evidence that Sir George had a brother Henry.It is not probable that Wood obtained his information from the family, for the deed of which Mr. Waters gives an abstract proves that Charles Downing, son of Sir George, knew that his grandfather's name was Emanuel so late as 1700, eight years after the publication of Wood's Athenae. The following letter, copied for us by G. D. Scull, Esq., of Oxford, England, from the original, shows that Wood, while engaged on his work, applied to the Rev. ) Anthony Stoddard, ancestor of the Stoddard family, came to Boston in the year 1629, nine years after the landing of the Pilgrims, 1620, and on the same ship with Matthew Grant, ancestor of our famous president

general. He was admitted a freeman in 1640, and was a representative in 1650-59-60, and from 1665 to 1684. He was the first judge of the superior court in Boston, holding the position for twenty years. He is said to have been a radical nonconformist, and became prominent in the affairs of the early puritan administration ; but, observes Mr. C. B. Stoddard, "I am very glad to say that I have never been able to discover that any Stoddard was ever concerned in any of the cruel persecutions that resulted from the puritanical character and extreme religious intolerance of the nonconformists of that period". Anthony Stoddard early took an active interest in the establishment of Harvard College, some of his sons graduating from that school. He married (first) Mary Downing, of Salem, sister of Sir George Downing, whose family name was given to the famous "Wall Street" of London, Downing street. He married (second) Barbara, widow of Captain Joseph Weld, of Roxbury, died April 15, 1654. He married (third) in 1655 a woman, whose first name was Christian, but whose maiden surname is unknown. Children by first marriage : 1. Solomon, a Harvard graduate, and its first librarian, acting as such for seven or eight years ; later a dissenting minister, stationed at Northampton, Massachusetts, and missionary at the Bermudas, making some important contributions in published sermons and books to the volcanic theological controversies of his time. 2. He was a freeman in 1670, member of the Artillery Company in 1675, also member of the Provincial Council, and much honored while living. tree: Western Michigan Genealogical Society ________________ Notes for Anthony Stoddard: In 1641 among members of the Skinner Guild in London, in a Lay Subsidy Roll, are the names of "Anthony Stoddard in New England" and "William Stoddard in Ludgate." Charles E. Banks derives him from the parish of St. Michael le Quern in London; on 26 Aug 1639 the Boston records show "there is leave granted to Mr. Anthony Stoddard, lynning drap. to become a Townsman." He was granted a lot of 100 acres, at Mount Woollaston, 27 Jan 1639/40; he was one of four chosen to trade with the Indians, 10 Jan 1641/2. He was Constable as early as 1641; in 1644 he was granted liberty "to open his shop-window-board two foot into the street." He was selectman, 1647-51; Town Recorder, 1651 and Commissioner, 1652, 1657-9, 1661, 1667, 1669-81; in 1682 he was chosen again for the last office but declined. He was made a freeman of Mass. Bay, 13 May 1640; It seems that as Constable of Boston he object to serving the Governor's warrant against Francis Hutchinson, son of the noted Anne, and spoke his mind too plainly, in consequence of which, on 7 Sep 1641, "Anthony Stoader confessing his fault in his unfiting speach to the Govenr in affronting of him, is fined 13 1/2l." This contretemps perhaps kept him for a time in disfavor with the ruling caste, but 9 years later, in May 1650 he was made one of a committee of 4 to audit the colony account, and in Oct 1651 was one of the Commissioners appointed to try minor cases (up to £10) in Boston, an office to which he was frequently re-appointed. He was one of the three appointed in May 1660 to the office of Surveyor General of Arms. He served Boston as Deputy longer than any other citizen has done. His first wife's death was noted by Rev. John Eliot of Roxbury in telling of an epidemic of influenze in 1647 in which Mrs. Winthrop, the Governor's wife died. "Also a lusty strong woman of Boston Mrs Stodder; fondly eate greene peaches, wch set her to so vyolent a vomiting as yt it burst her intrals, as is thought, & so she dyed." Sewall's Diary, calls him at death "the ancientest shop-keeper in town" his will, dated 29 Dec 1684, proved 19 May 1687; More About Anthony Stoddard: Occupation: shopkeeper Anthony Stoddard, Linen-Draper, was allowed to become a citizen, or townsman, of Boston, 26th august 1639. He married four times and had many children. His first wife was Mary, daughter of Emanuel DOWNING of Salem, niece of Governor WINTHROP, and sister of Sir. George DOWNING. Solomon was a grandfather of Jonathan EDWARDS [1703-1758, American philosopher, mystic, and Puritan theologian]. Arron BURR, Vice-President of the United States was one of his descendants. Many distinguished ministers and scholars have been produced by this family." Anthony was pastor in Woodbury for 60 years, as well town lawyer, doctor and clerk of court. In his latter role he produced a large volume of records and documents available for viewing at Woodbury Town Hall.
