Did you know?
In 1894, in the year that Sophia Lak was born, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
Did you know?
In 1934, Sophia was 40 years old when on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.

How to Throw a Party in the 1950s
Do you remember watching these films - or sometimes filmstrips - about dating, family life, courtesy, or citizenship on rainy days in school? If you're old enough you might have saw movies like this in home economics or social studies. They were always welcome because at least you had a break from listening to the teacher - but even at the time, they seemed a little corny. This 1950 Coronet film, "What Makes A Good Party", is typical of those types of films and as usual, provides a smile while some interesting observations into life in the 1950's.
