Introduction

Stovall is one of the most well-known and respected faces in the Baltimore television market. He has worked in Charm City for more than three decades, worked at WBAL-TV 11 twice, first from 1978 to 1983, and again for nearly 20 years beginning in April 2003 until present. At 69, he has announced that he will retire at the end of the year (2022) after 50 years in TV and news. Stan is one of the most beloved anchors in Baltimore and has spent roughly half of his career on TV Hill. As stated in an interview, "When I signed this contract two years ago, I knew it would be the last. I wanted to hit that 50-year milestone, which I did in June of 2020—that was my primary motivation for staying in the business, because I knew that for an African-American news anchor, I might be the only one to have lasted that long.”

Stanley's mother’s family was from upstate New York and his father’s family was from Birmingham, Alabama, one of the most racially discriminatory and segregated cities in the country at that time. In 1958, Stovall recalls visiting his great-grandmother on her deathbed in Birmingham and seeing the Jim Crow South for the first time.

Stan attended Carl Hayden High School. He was a scholar and star athlete, earning straight "As" and served as captain of the football, basketball, and track teams. He was elected senior class president, a position he ran for, and won, in hopes to cure himself of his fear of public speaking. As class president, he was elected to attend the Arizona Boys State program to learn how to be a more effective student leader. This program landed him a summer journalism job when Ernest W. McFarland, a TV executive and former Arizona governor from KTVK-TV, the local ABC affiliate and sponsor of the program, heard Stovall’s speeches and was so impressed that he hired him for a summer stint. He later went on to attend school at Arizona State University where he was balancing a full class load as well as his job of being a journalist and weekend news anchor.

He has worked in Charm City for more than three decades, worked at WBAL-TV 11 twice, first from 1978 to 1983, and again for nearly 20 years beginning in April 2003 until present. He has announced that he will retire (2022) now after 50 years in TV and news. Throughout Stovall’s career, there have been many memorable moments, including being in a boxing ring with Muhammad Ali, interviewing President Richard Nixon in 1972 when he was running for re-election, as well as and covering the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama.
