  • Introduction

    Stefanie (or "Steffie" as she told me to call her). When I was 10 years old in 1967, I was admitted to Deaconess Hospital in downtown, Milwaukee. It was located on the south side of 19th and Wisconsin Ave. I was there for about a month, and I'd periodically have Steffie Zupnik as my nurse. She was a very gentle, sweet, and loving nurse. As a child, I remember her most for the sincere love I would sense from her. On the day I was discharged from Deaconess, I was walking down the corridor and passed a small room with its door open. As I glimpsed into the room, I saw Steffie standing with kleenex in her hand. She was facing a wall in the room, making her appear to be on my right side. I could see her look up to see me. Her kleenex at her face, and as her eyes looked sideways to see me, I saw her crying. Steffie Zupnik was a nurse at Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee. She worked there, but she also lived a ministry there, and over 50 years later the effects of her sweet love for a sick child will never be forgotten.
