Steinar Tjomstol was born on April 18, 1925 in Arendal, Aust-Agder, Norway. He is the son of Hans Jorgen Tjomstol (1876-1951) and Inger Tollekliev (1892-1977) with siblings Camila (1914-1988), Anders (1915-2002), Thyra (1917-2000), Tinn (1919-1970), and Stein Tjomstol (1921-1921). He immigrated to the United States and arrived in New York, New York on July 10, 1946. Two years after arriving in the US, he married Margaret Stonsby (1928-2007) in Bedford, Westchester, New York, USA on October 24, 1948. The couple had multiple children together and lived in Mount Kisco, Westchester, New York, USA.
